Preparation
A calm, clean start supports a smoother tattoo experience.
A tattoo creates a controlled injury to the skin. Good preparation can help reduce unnecessary bleeding, improve comfort, support consistent skin response, and create better conditions for healing.
Preparation may vary depending on your health, skin condition, tattoo placement, and individual needs. This page outlines the approach I use at JINDHAMMA.
This guide is for educational purposes only and does not replace medical advice.
If you have a medical condition, take prescription medication, or have concerns about whether tattooing is appropriate for you, please consult a qualified healthcare provider before your appointment.

Protect the tattoo area from sunburn and irritation.
-
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the area.

Arrive with clean, dry skin and no lotion, oil, or body butter on the placement.

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You must be 18 or older.
2. 7 Days Before
Protect Your Skin
Avoid tanning and prolonged sun exposure on the tattoo area.
I cannot tattoo over skin that is:
-
Sunburned or peeling
-
Broken, cut, or scraped
-
Inflamed or unusually sensitive
-
Affected by an active rash or skin flare
Avoid harsh scrubs, aggressive exfoliation, waxing, chemical treatments, or anything else that leaves the area irritated.
If you have recently had laser treatment, a chemical peel, waxing, or another skin procedure near the placement, please tell me before your appointment.
Support Your Body
Aim for consistent sleep, balanced meals, and normal hydration during the week before your appointment.
If the area is dry, you may apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer during the days leading up to your appointment. A special tattoo product is not necessary.
Do not apply lotion, oil, or body butter to the area on the day of your appointment.
Health Information
Please tell me before your appointment if you have:
-
Diabetes
-
A bleeding or clotting condition
-
Immune suppression or an autoimmune condition
-
A history of keloids or raised scarring
-
Eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, or another recurring skin condition
-
A current infection or are taking antibiotics
-
Allergies or sensitivities to adhesives, medical tape, latex, or skincare products
-
A condition or medication that may affect bleeding, healing, immunity, or skin sensitivity
Depending on the circumstances, I may ask you to consult your healthcare provider before proceeding.
Tattooing will be postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
3. 48–24 Hours Before
Avoid Alcohol
Do not consume alcohol during the 24 hours before your appointment.
Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and may increase bleeding during the tattoo session.
Avoid Skin Irritation
Do not:
-
Shave aggressively
-
Wax the tattoo area
-
Use harsh scrubs or exfoliating acids
-
Apply a new product that may cause a reaction
-
Tan or expose the area to prolonged sunlight
If you are unsure about shaving, leave the hair in place. I will prepare the area safely if needed.
Rest and Hydrate
Get a full night’s sleep and drink water normally throughout the day.
Plan a calm schedule after your appointment. Avoid activities that are likely to cause heavy sweating, friction, contamination, or sun exposure around the fresh tattoo.
4. Appointment Day
Eat Before Your Appointment
Eat a balanced meal approximately 1–2 hours before your session.
A meal containing both protein and carbohydrates can help maintain your energy and comfort. Arriving without eating may increase the likelihood of dizziness, nausea, or feeling faint.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water and arrive normally hydrated. Excessive water intake is not necessary.
Arrive with Clean, Dry Skin
Shower before your appointment if possible.
Do not apply the following to the tattoo area:
-
Lotion
-
Body oil
-
Body butter
-
Perfume or fragranced body spray
-
Numbing cream, spray, or gel unless approved in advance
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Choose loose, comfortable clothing that:
-
Provides easy access to the tattoo area
-
Does not place pressure on the placement
-
Will not rub against the fresh tattoo afterward
Dark or neutral clothing is recommended because tattoo ink or other products may cause staining.
Arrive Sober and Ready
Please arrive on time and free from alcohol or recreational substances.
If I believe you are under the influence or unable to provide informed consent, the appointment will not proceed.
5. Alcohol, Medications & Numbing Products
Alcohol
Alcohol is not permitted during the 24 hours before your appointment.
If recent alcohol use or intoxication is suspected, I reserve the right to refuse or postpone the service.
Prescription Medications and Blood Thinners
Tell me in advance if you take anticoagulants, antiplatelet medication, or any prescription medication that may affect bleeding, healing, immunity, or skin sensitivity.
Never stop, skip, reduce, or adjust prescribed medication for a tattoo appointment unless your prescribing healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Depending on the medication or health condition, I may ask you to consult your healthcare provider before proceeding.
Over-the-Counter Medications and Supplements
Some over-the-counter medications and supplements may affect bleeding or skin response.
Do not take additional medication or supplements solely to prepare for the tattoo unless directed by your healthcare provider.
If you are uncertain about a medication or supplement, consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider before the appointment.
Numbing Products
Do not apply numbing cream, gel, spray, or patches unless you have discussed the specific product with me and received approval in advance.
Some numbing products can:
-
Irritate the skin
-
Cause redness, swelling, or blanching
-
Change how the skin responds during tattooing
-
Contain unsafe concentrations of active ingredients
-
Create additional risks when applied incorrectly or over a large area
Arriving with an unapproved numbing product already applied may require the appointment to be postponed.
I do not prescribe medication or provide medical advice. Decisions concerning medications and medical conditions remain between you and your healthcare provider.
6. Skin Preparation
Hair Removal
You do not need to shave the tattoo area before your appointment.
If hair removal is necessary, I will prepare the area safely. Shaving at home may cause small cuts, razor burn, or irritation.
Avoid waxing or using chemical hair-removal products on the area before your appointment.
Moisturizing
If your skin is dry, apply a small amount of light, fragrance-free moisturizer during the days leading up to your appointment.
On the appointment day, arrive with clean, dry skin. Do not apply lotion, oil, or body butter to the tattoo area.
Sun Exposure
Protect the area from tanning and sunburn.
Tattooing cannot be performed on skin that is sunburned, peeling, unusually tender, or otherwise damaged by sun exposure.
Skin Readiness
The tattoo area must be healthy, calm, and fully intact on the day of your appointment.
It must be free from:
-
Open wounds or cuts
-
Active rashes or skin infections
-
Inflamed acne
-
Eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis flare-ups
-
Unexplained redness, swelling, or irritation
-
Sunburn, peeling, or broken skin
I reserve the right to postpone the appointment if I determine that your skin is not in a suitable condition for safe tattooing or may affect the quality or healing of the tattoo.
7. What to Bring
Please bring:
-
A valid government-issued photo ID
-
Your usual method of payment
-
Water
-
A light snack for a longer appointment, if needed
-
Any medically necessary personal items, such as an inhaler or glucose supplies
You may bring one guest. Your guest is welcome to wait in the waiting area immediately outside the tattoo room while the tattoo is being performed.
8. When to Reschedule
Please contact me as soon as possible if you have:
-
A fever, flu, contagious illness, or active infection
-
Vomiting, significant weakness, or are feeling generally unwell
-
Sunburn, peeling, or significant irritation on the tattoo area
-
An open wound, cut, rash, or skin infection near the placement
-
Inflamed acne or an active eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis flare
-
A recent skin procedure that has not completely healed
-
A new medical diagnosis or medication change that may affect the appointment
-
A concern about your ability to heal safely
Tattooing will also be postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Important Notice
I reserve the right to refuse or reschedule a tattoo if your health, skin condition, preparation, or ability to provide informed consent does not meet safe tattooing standards.
Please do not conceal an illness, medication, allergy, pregnancy, breastfeeding status, or skin condition. Accurate information helps me choose the safest approach for you.
9. Aftercare Preview
Complete aftercare instructions will be provided after your appointment.
When appropriate, I apply one latex-free, waterproof, breathable adhesive tattoo bandage. The bandage is generally worn for approximately 24 hours and is not reapplied after removal.
Latex-free does not mean allergy-free. The adhesive itself may still cause irritation or an allergic reaction.
Please tell me before your appointment if you have experienced a reaction to:
-
Adhesive bandages
-
Medical tape
-
Transparent film dressings
-
Skincare products used on broken or sensitive skin
If an adhesive bandage is not appropriate, I may use a sterile, non-adherent dressing for short-term protection before you continue with open healing.
After any covering is removed, the tattoo should be washed gently and cared for according to the complete Aftercare Guide.
10. FAQs
1. How far in advance should I prepare?
Begin approximately 3–7 days before your appointment.
Protect the tattoo area from sun and irritation, sleep consistently, eat balanced meals, and keep your skin in a calm, healthy condition.
2. Can I get tattooed if I am sick?
No.
Please reschedule if you have a fever, contagious illness, active infection, or feel significantly unwell.
Tattooing while your body is already under stress may affect your comfort and recovery.
3. Can I get tattooed while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No.
JINDHAMMA does not provide tattoo services during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
You are welcome to submit a new request once you are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding.
4. What should I eat before my appointment?
Eat a balanced meal approximately 1–2 hours before your session.
A meal containing protein and carbohydrates can help maintain steady energy. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach.
5. Can I drink coffee?
A moderate amount of your usual caffeine is generally acceptable.
Avoid excessive caffeine or energy drinks, particularly if they make you anxious, shaky, or uncomfortable.
6. Can I drink alcohol the day before?
Do not consume alcohol during the 24 hours before your appointment.
If you arrive under the influence or recent alcohol use may affect the safety of the session, the appointment will not proceed.
7. Should I shave the tattoo area?
No.
If hair removal is needed, I will prepare the area.
Arriving unshaved is preferable to arriving with razor burn, cuts, or irritation.
8. Should I moisturize beforehand?
You may apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer during the days before your appointment if your skin is dry.
On the appointment day, arrive with clean, dry skin and do not apply lotion, oil, or body butter to the area.
9. What should I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the placement and will not rub against the fresh tattoo afterward.
Dark or neutral clothing is recommended because staining may occur.
10. Can I bring a guest?
Yes.
You may bring one guest.
While you are being tattooed, your guest may wait in the waiting area immediately outside the tattoo room.
11. What if I take prescription medication or blood thinners?
Tell me before your appointment.
Do not stop, skip, reduce, or change any prescribed medication without instructions from your healthcare provider.
Depending on the circumstances, I may ask you to consult your healthcare provider before proceeding.
12. What if I have eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or sensitive skin?
Please tell me before booking or send a clear photo of the placement.
I cannot tattoo over active irritation, broken skin, infection, or a skin-condition flare. The appointment may proceed once the area is fully calm and intact.
13. What if I am allergic or sensitive to adhesives?
Tell me in advance, even if the tattoo bandage is described as latex-free.
A latex-free bandage can still cause a reaction to its adhesive.
If an adhesive tattoo bandage is unsuitable, a sterile, non-adherent dressing and open-healing method may be used instead.
14. Can I use numbing cream?
Only if we have discussed and approved the specific product before your appointment.
Do not apply numbing cream, gel, spray, or patches without prior approval. Unapproved use may result in the appointment being postponed.
15. Can I exercise before my appointment?
Light or normal activity is generally fine if it does not leave you exhausted, dehydrated, sunburned, or irritated around the tattoo area.
Avoid intense exercise immediately before the appointment if it is likely to affect your comfort or skin condition.
16. How long will the appointment take?
The duration depends on the design, size, placement, skin response, and any breaks needed during the session.
An estimated appointment length will be discussed during booking when possible.
17. Can I take a break during the session?
Yes.
Breaks are always available.
Please tell me whenever you feel uncomfortable, light-headed, or need to pause.
